There are certain models of cell phones that have the GPS feature included on them. When deciding to purchase one of these phones you should keep in mind that it is illegal to track someone without his knowledge as this is an invasion of his privacy. You must have the cell phone subscriber's permission before you can enable a GPS device. In matters of the person's personal safety, however, a judge can waive the need for this permission, such as in the case of an elderly person who is known to "wander" off and become lost and disoriented. A GPS tracking system could be the difference between life and death and would probably be allowed in this situation. This law is also not in effect when you are tracking your children, as long as the cell phone is in your name. For children over eighteen years of age, however, it is probably is not a good idea.

As well as tracking seniors and children, there may be times when you need to be tracked yourself. If you are an avid outdoorsman who enjoys going off into the wilderness alone, it is a good idea to give your spouse or a close friend permission to track your cell phone in case of an emergency situation where you may be alone and miles away from any help. This is also a good idea if you are traveling in bad weather, especially if your vehicle does not have a GPS system of its own. In these cases, it is better to take the extra precautions than to suffer for it later.

Some of the companies that offer GPS tracking are T-Mobil and Sprint. Some of the cell phones available with this feature that are on the market include Motorolla, iDEN, and Blackberry. Disney Mobile and Wherify Wireless both offer their own versions of GPS cell phones. Most of these companies have a call center and a Web site that enables you to pinpoint a person's location easily.

Again, GPS tracking devices and cell phones are wonderful tools to use to track someone when it involves a safety issue. Using it for the wrong reasons, however, is illegal as well as unconstitutional. You should use your best judgment when deciding to make use of a GPS system.

This article will present the main components of a GPS Tracking Solution, and will start expanding on the first component: GPS Trackers. It will take me this article and the next one to go in detail over GPS devices.

GPS Devices

In this section I will define what a GPS Device, and how they work; after that I will present the types of GPS Trackers, including most of the features that these devices offer, and my opinion in regards to each type.

At its simplest definition, the GPS device, or better the GPS tracker, is the component in charge of receiving the information about the location of the vehicle, and providing this data to the GPS Tracking Application through the Data Transmission System (which will be explained in coming articles). GPS Trackers are usually small boxes (metal or plastic) that can be the size of a man's wallet, or a little bigger. All of them need at least one antenna (GPS antenna), and most of them need an additional antenna to enable the data transmission module. So this leads to a first classification of GPS Trackers:

-Full satellite trackers. This type of trackers will use satellites to receive and transmit data.

-Hybrid trackers. This type of trackers will use satellites to acquire location (we will see some variations here later in this article), and another method to transmit the data (a data modem, a data port to download the data, etc).

On the next article I will expand on these concepts.

So, the main task of a GPS Tracker is to provide information of the location of a vehicle or an asset, or a person. The location of the units is usually acquired from the GPS satellites, but there is another method based on triangulation with cell towers to calculate locations. Getting the location from satellites is the most accurate mechanism, providing a minimal margin of error most of the times (from 2 up to 50 feet). GPS location can be acquired anywhere in the world. The only down side for this location technology is that the GPS antenna has to have a view to the sky. For example, if the vehicle gets into a garage, most probably there will not be GPS locations available.

Getting the location based on a triangulation with the cell towers (those that are also used by our cell phones to transmit voice and data) has a bigger margin of error (up to a few hundred feet), making it a not very accurate location mechanism. This type of location also requires the presence of the named cell towers to work. The upside of this mechanism is that it will perfectly work within buildings, which is not the case for GPS satellite location. Some GPS Trackers are designed to work with both location mechanisms, creating a new concept called Assisted GPS (AGPS).

There are mainly three types of GPS Trackers: Passive Trackers, PING Trackers, and Live Trackers. Also, there are some GPS Trackers that have more features than other - not just a location of the vehicle.

In this article I have dissected a GPS Tracking solution into three main components: a GPS Tracker, a data transmission system, and a GPS Tracking application. I have also started exposing the details of GPS Trackers, specifically the two main ways to locate a vehicle. Finally, I introduced two more elements to consider in GPS Trackers: types of trackers and advanced features of a GPS device.

Led by the former head of the German rocket program, Wernher von Braun, NASA immediately began to explore the possibility of sending human beings into space. The GPS system was developed exclusively for and by the United States military. In'83, however, after a Korean flight was shot down by Russia for being in the wrong airspace, Ronald Reagan made it available to the masses. He believed that the world needed this technology in order to avoid disasters like the Korean flight. Since then, it has evolved into much more than a military device.

The theory behind global positioning is simple, but its implementation is rather complex. The U.S. government has approximately 30 satellites in orbit at any given moment. These satellites send out a constant stream of microwave signals back down towards the earth. A GPS tracking system on the ground receives the signal from the satellite. It then calculates the exact position, direction, and speed of itself based on these signals. Each time the receiver gets a signal from the satellite, the new calculations are made immediately then relayed as coordinates.

Indeed, GPS is extraordinarily useful. To say global positioning technology is useful is about as insightful as saying a hammer is useful. If you're lost, you will certainly be grateful for it. Actors are fickle, that much anyone knows. But my boss is light years beyond fickle. She's a single parent with two kids, hanging on every call-back. That's understandable if you've got to make the mortgage on a mansion in the Hills. I just wish she wouldn't use me as her personal, emotional punching bag.

I took the job thinking all my Hollywood dreams would come true. I would get to meet famous people and schmooze my way into a film career. The problem is she doesn't introduce me to anyone. She only refers to me in the third person. "My assistant will get that for you." Thanks for the big break.

The sheer tonnage of waste product she spews my way is absurd. I'm still waiting for Emperor Nero to jump out of the bushes and smash me over the head with his fiddle. If her kids cry about anything, I get blamed. It must be the stress of watching mommy slide down from B actress to C has-been. It's a rough town, this Hollywood, but its even rougher when you're playing Hamlet to a has-been's ghost.

I say she's a "B" actress but in all honesty her career has been on the skids for the better part of a decade. She got lucky with a sitcom and hasn't been able to turn it into some bigger or better. I've accepted that I'm her foil -- her therapy. I'm her walking, talking punching bag -- and nurse. In the city of Angels, you've got to start somewhere.

Colors, images, and content will appear vibrant and detailed. When the slide compartment is slid up the user will have access to the alphanumeric keypad and four shortcut buttons. The buttons are very useful because they automatically take you to the four most used functions of any cell phone text messaging, e-mail, calendar, and the alarm clock menu.

The features found on the LX290 aren't things that cant be found on other more expensive phones. But what makes this phone unique is that it incorporates many functions that people wouldn't expect on such an affordable phone. For starters the phone has a GPS tracking system with turn by turn directions. Secondly the LX290 features a simple yet functional web browser. Also featured is a USB port for easy filing sharing. The phone is also Bluetooth enabled for headsets and speakers. One of the best features on this phone is the multitude of messaging syncing functions. It allows you to sign on to AIM, AOL, and Yahoo Messenger for instant messages, and Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, and AOL for e-mail.

Unfortunately the camera on the phone is nothing to write home about. The camera is only 1.3 megapixels, which is not much in the cell phone world. The photo quality is decent enough with the pictures appearing blurry and slightly grainy. To help in taking the best looking photos possible there are many image control options. They are three different resolutions, five white balance presets, four color tones, and more. The phone is absent of any video recording capabilities.

Fortunately the phone features an amazing call quality. While using this phone users can experience phone calls absent of any outside interference or static. Callers will sound crystal clear over the ear piece. You will also sound very clear to any caller. The speakerphone works equally well and is simple to use.

This phone is specifically geared towards individuals who aren't interested in having a phone that can do anything and everything. The LG LX290 however is a simple phone with incredibly useful applications which anyone looking for a less packed phone will surely enjoy.
